ASB Argentina
We are a group of 20 Northwestern students planning to spend our spring break doing community service in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Schools from around the country are teaming up with Hillel Argentina to help improve the surrounding communities in Buenos Aires. We are dedicated to alleviating third world poverty and improving the plight of the international Jewish community. We will be working with both interfaith and Jewish community organizations on projects dealing with education, infant care, literacy and more. We will be partnering specifically with an under-resourced school to improve the quality of education for its students by painting murals in outdoor play areas, improving the music-education facility, and building a library so the students can access books and improve literacy. We will also volunteer in a childcare center that serves underprivileged families. By completing our service projects and spending time with the people of Buenos Aires we will prove to them that those facing the challenges of third-world poverty are not alone.

We have been fundraising so that we can make a donation to one of the causes that we will be working with (to be determined). If you are interested in making a donation, please contact Shauna Perelman at perlman.shauna@gmail.com. Please note that she will be out of contact while we are on the trip from March 20-28.

And don't forget to check out what our friends are doing on the ASB Cuba trip at http://asbcuba.tumblr.com!

La Bomba

So after a long first day at the Tel Aviv school we had an excellent night planned. Many participants of our trip have had friends study abroad in Buenos Aires. Many of them, shout out Allie Silv, recommended attending La Bomba de Tiempo. This is a weekly, outdoor percussion concert of sorts. We had no idea what we were about to stumble upon. Dana, our fabulous coordinator arranged for pre-purchased tickets at only 15 pesos! The equivalent of less than 5$. We arrived to see a line of international tourists and locals, wrapped around the block and down the street. We were amazed at the popularity of this event, and the best thing is that we did not have to wait in line. La bomba goes for two hours, from 8-10 pm at the Konex community center. It was an experience like no other. La Bomba de Tiempo is a concert for a group, of the same name, made up of local Argentine percussionists. Frequently, they invite special guests to play their instruments such as saxophone or trumbone with the group. This is a great honor as the group is very well respected by the community. The music changes from week to week and the musicans look to the conductor to adhere to the in the moment music changes. This culminates in an intense mix of musical passion and dance throughout the packed audience. The entire experience is hard to put into words, but truly it was a cultural musical experience that spoke directly to my soul. I would say, this goes for the rest of the participants as well. Having been on other ASB trips, we could not be more fortunate than to participate and observe an event such as this- one where the boundaries of language, religion, and home country dissolve and everyone embraces the language of the world: music. More to come very soon about Tuesday morning and the open air markets… Paz y Amor (Peace and Love) Jenn
